.
there have been some very nasty comments coming through some blogs lately and they caused me to make the following responses on emma's blog[which i will, of course, elaborate on afterward] (the post which inspired the hate comments and this response is here):
i think maybe that's the kind of person where you just delete their comments. it's hate mail pure and simple.
i wish blogger had a flag this profile option.
i know they're just trying to get a rise out of us. and i know that letting them means they win. so i'm not going to swear and yell but i will say this.
"let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
the more that i think about it the less i think it is appropriate to actually delete hatemongering comments. if you do that they just get even more self righteous and holier than thou than they already were.
sort of like those christian fundamentalists who show up at the gay pride parade simply to spread intolerance and bigotry. i mean it's an easy target right? show up in a large group of people who have been disenfranchised from the mainstream and hate them. it's not like any of the authorities will care.
at worst you will accomplish nothing and at best you will find others who share your hate or worse yet some poor lost child who will be susceptible to your particular line of bull.
the thing is, the people who don't agree with you and who think you are in fact working for evil can take cracks at you and make fun of you. the problem being, of course, that that will simply convince you of your rightness.
would that i could think of a loving way to enfold such people in the spirit of peace and sharing.
in fact i saw a lovely sign yesterday that said
"what would jesus do? ask yourself?
love or hate?
inclusion or persecution?"
and that sign was RIGHT. god damm it jesus made friends of the whores and the lepers because no one else was honest or loving. love each other and stay out of each other's bedrooms and the world would improve drastically.
which brings me to:
according to the buddhists it doesn't matter what your intentions are but only what your deeds are. thus they don't care whose name you do things in it's the actual deed they consider.
i like this because then when people hatemonger and claim that it's in the name of the lord the truth is clear. although you claim to work in god's name you are nonetheless evil. the same way that a satanist who goes around rescuing lost puppies and abused children is good.
whoever this is has such a small and sad life that they have to come around to popular blogs and make fun of people's weaknesses. this is extra funny because they don't even have the courage to put their own weaknesses out there in exchange.
can you imagine how unhappy that kind of person must be inside? i've never yet met anyone who was having a happy and fulfilled life (and the people who are happy and fulfilled also tend to live love and gratitude) who was also judgemental and cruel.
just doesn't go together you know.
kind of like how the homophobe is almost always gay...
that comment basically stands for itself but i will say this. if you are going to go around and make horrid comments on other people's web offerings you are no better than the trolls and the spammers who killed usenet.
what's extra tragic about this is that none of us trolled you.
none of us went looking for you.
none of us went by your blog and said nasty things [not that we could because you don't have the balls to post one] and i'm pretty sure that none of us went by any of your friends blogs and trolled them. on that last one i say this because like attracts like and none of my group are hatemongers.
none of us imposed our lifestyle choices on you.
you came looking for us for NO other reason than to make us feel shitty about ourselves and you did it in the most evil and low way possible. you came in through the back door and wished one of my friends DEAD!
and you are probably sitting self righteous and happy in your ivory tower and thinking about how you showed those sinners.
yeah you certainly showed them.
you showed them that once again more evil has been perpetuated in the name of GOD than any other word in the WORLD.
in the world.
you showed that intolerance and hate are alive in america today.
you taught us with your deeds how such nastiness as the klu klux klan can gain a foothold in the 'land of the free' and you definetely demonstrated what really is worth hating in our society.
i am truly beginning to believe that those who spread intolerance and bigotry and hate should be sterilised and rendered incapable of raising children. then at least you wouldn't be able to raise another generation of people who hate.
but you will.
in fact you're the kind of person that believes birth control is a tool of the devil so not only will you raise hateful little hooligans who think that bombing their fellow man is an excellent way to force them to agree with you? and who think that they really are entitled to their suv's? and who think global warming is an artsy fartsy liberal fantasy to get more votes? and who think science is a tool of the devil [unless you're making bombs]?
you're going to raise fourteen of them.
it's no wonder the good guys can't win. we practice RESTRAINT. for every one we make you make fourteen more.
frankly margaret cho sums up this entire post in one sentence:
"any kind of love is fine, it's your hate you gotta watch"
next time you're tempted to say something hateful? put yourself in someone else's shoes instead.
or do the tougher thing and try understanding their side of things and learning from each other. oh if only we could all learn to HEAR each other. what a world it would be.
"any kind of love is fine..."

Oh sassiness.... your words resonate wit me today more than ever...
Ummm wit is wih....and also...I was first. Sorry...I am a bit on the low side.

nat: what's up? you've been down for the better part of ten days now and that's WITH argentina kicking ass in the footie.
congrats on being first but i wish you were happier.
*note to self Never piss Sass off!
Well done my fine friend!
NAt :) cheer! Big smiles! Im sending Margaret Cho love your way.
Ms. Sassilicious you delectable little tart... Friday was a very dark afternoon. On top of all my personal complication some reaming ass sphinkter comes in and feels he has to rock a world or two.
Looking back I see that really T and yourself are the only ones that had my back on that even though people floated in and out witnessing the wreckage of me.
You know, Im not sure what bothered me more... being hurt or having people standing back witnessing the hurt and not extending an arm to say "fuck you dick head, go away..."
I do when it happens to somebody else, it's whether the evil one chooses to listen or not that gets my goat, but I always try to have a friends back.
So when this happens, and people spectate a persons emotional mass destruction and mushroom cloud of pain in their soul, is it just as bad as the demon thats provoking? In my book it is...
I never expected a post like this. It touches my heart to know that for every person that stood back and watched me get my ass ripped apart without speaking or offering a shoulder, there's a golden and special friend like you that completes the daisy chain of mankinds righteousness.
a cool drink of water for the rampant deceptive world of 'friendship' some of us live in... you are.
I hold you and T valuable and eternally close to my cockels...
I was going to email this but I think declaring it is not such a bad idea :)
with a small tear of pride and warmth and a hand to my heart I give great thanks.
thanks.
oh.. *waving* Hi, I am the blogger and thus outing myself...
*giggle*
If the above comment didn't out me already!!!
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
I was there watching while this person attack EN, I didn't respond because quite frankly I could not have said anything better than Blondie except maybe an "Oh yeah, what she said!"
I always figure why add inanity to profundity.
The odd thing is when I got back to my blog the creep had insulted both my parenting skills and my children.
I chose to ignore him as I am assuming the others commenting after him chose to do.
madame: the minute i wrote those comments i stuck them in my drafts. i knew i was too mad to write sanely then but i knew it had to be said.
glad that you appreciated :)
emma everyone is entitled to their opinion but no one is entitled to hatemonger in a place they are invading. and i've linked that post from my first paragraph btw.
i am SO in love with margaret cho since pile made me watch cho: revolution.
honey i wanted to kill him with my bare hands but i knew that was just what he wanted... so i went looking for the peace to be found after the violence and this is the post that came out.
but the only reason that i have the balls to open my mouth in these situations is because i've been the victim so many many times that eventually all i could do was start fighting for justice. please don't judge the friends who aren't me... we all have our places and talents right?
i've always been the most hurt when people stayed silent and watched me get treated unfairly. it's just how it works. but i've also had to recognize that i seem tough so i seem like i don't need defending. that that generally means that i'm the one that needs it most seems to escape most folks you know?
you come off like a tough broad, who's to know the shell is so thin right?
you cannot control the evil one's actions love, only your own reactions. which is a simple thing to say but it gains depth as you think about it. the people who stand back and watch share guilt for certain, the movie 'the accused' definetely gave that thought to the world...
is it just as bad? i don't know... but it's definetely a participation. i have to say though that if i were going to react as T did i might then not have commented at all. she had said that bit already you know?
it's hard to know in blogland... conversations are clearer.
anyway, i'm glad that i touched your heart, i'm glad that this eases the pain a little and i hope that at least one piece of good news comes your way this week. can't think of anyone more deserving.
i have tears you know, i'm that worried about you and that friend of yours.
way to out yourself. and you're welcome.
blondie: ah now you're describing your hair again *chuckles*
i could see that he had managed to make you lose it and i was sad because that's all that he wanted you know? at the same time for EMMA to see you standing there in your armor with a shield over her head was probably the best thing anyone did for her that whole day... so i would say that between us we found the happy middle.
i have this vision of you really, in mail and a shining helm with a glorious shield over emma and a sword upheld and waiting. ah you're a goddess you are.
damm like i wish someone would draw T as paladin now... i wish i could draw it cause she looks like her true self somehow. that's you T, you're the paladin.... i'm the mediator who rides behind you.
anyway, talk about digressions, i don't understand it either T, and they always seem to be the people who claim to speak in the voice of the righteous. and to me once you claim to speak for someone else you're probably not worth listening to.
i wish they would see that it's okay to be different, that difference is the magic.
no one in the world deserves to be wished death. no one. but em does nothing but try to love her loves and care for her people while someone has a freaking sword hanging over her head and for someone to come in and get her when she's vulnerable? that's just low.
go T go... you got it, hate is worth healing every time.
pyr: i try really hard to only say things that i believe or feel to be true. i often fail. but you have to try right?
i wish deleting them was the answer but it isn't. i think maybe the answers that were posted in her comments section was the right thing. i loved johnny's answer from yesterday actually. you have to let them speak or you're worse than they are...
it has to be that they lack love right? how can you love and yet be like that? but then aren't there happily married couples who are evil? ahhh so HARD to know what's right.
thanks!
madame: you know what i like about this? you said something here that emma answered in your blog and thus from communication things are better.
amazing what happens if people just have the nerve to say what they think. god it's so hard. i think that you had the correct response for you. i also know that next time emma will be less likely to think you don't have her back... that wasn't well put but you know what i mean.
why on earth would anyone insult YOUR parenting skills???
*mind boggles*
so no one on your blog even answered him? neat, curious if he ever bothers to come back.
even the username screams troll. It's entirely possible he doesn't even believe the hate he's spewing, he's just trying to get a rise.
Anyhoo..I wouldn't want to answer there, because it WOULD encourage, but I heard a great argument about the embryo/baby/life debate:
in brief, paraphrasing:
person a: It's not a life, it's an embryo, embryos are just bundles of cells, they're not ANYTHING yet...that's what a stem cell is.
Person b: They may not be a life yet, but they WILL be one day, therefore it's wrong to kill/harvest them
Person c: (here comes the quote) Well, you're not dead yet, but you will be one day, so why don't we kill you now?
sass, I adore you. You are such a good friend.
I've never visited 'everything nice's blog before, and I'm so sorry she had to go through that. I don't get people sometimes...well, most of the time. I honestly think their own lives are just so miserable that they just spill out into everything else they do. It's sort of sad, when you think of it, how miserable their lives must be to where they have to try and ruin even a strangers day.
But, thank God, that we have people like you, sass, who stand up for what and who they believe in. It's why you're loved...greatly.
Hmmm it's a combo...nothing major... issues at work, changes in my schedule, stress about the dissertation, tooth issues. But it shall all pass. It's minor compared to people with bigger issues to deal with. And I think I am a bit antsy about wanting Mr. Hagfish to be here NOW. lol
-N
i will, as i often do, quote from seinfeld:
elaine: "i will never understand people."
jerry: "they're the WORST."
okay, obviously, not all people... and clearly not you, sass...
it's just... where do all these motherfuckers come from?
and why do they get under our skin??
Everyone should have at least one friend like you, Sass. Your loyalty is refreshing.
I'll have to go take a read cause I'm in the dark about what happened, but the support is the important part and it looks like EN's got it from you guys.
Good post, Sass.
md: for sure. and i think my experience on usenet is what allowed me to spot him. seen him before so to speak.
in another post he made all sorts of cryptic *hah* references to being sent by others. i think it's some friend of that crazy chick es jumped out of a car to avoid. anyhow
i like your summation, it's bried and to the point and resonates. always a sign of a good argument.
kathi: aw thanks *blush* ... i don't think of myself that way but i never mind when others do.
i think you've never been drawn there. she has a very different lifestyle from you and although i think you would appreciate her i'm not sure you would enjoy her style. anyway i find you tend to click the links you should somehow.
anyway it sucked to see someone do that to her and i'm only sorry i wasn't tehre sooner. i just don't understand why anyone thinks that that kind of vitriol can do any kind of good.
it's definetely sad, you have to wonder what he's compensating for. i like that last commenter who said that this guy was there to make him feel better about himself... like why people watch jerry springer, to feel better about their own lives.
wow. wow. that's the second time this week someone thanked a higher power for my existence. i'm going to get all high on myself! (and a bit teary)
thanks kathi :)
nat: the combos get you for sure, you can handle any one thing or two or even three but then all of a sudden it's a hundred!
and a hundred is hard.
at least august is less than two months now? you know that really that will fly by. are your teeth still bothering you? i thought you healed well...
terry: you can't say clearly not me, i am the asshole in someone else's story today for sure. well maybe not, and a cute boy did buy me dinner... but still you know what i mean.
sure i try to be a good guy but i've been the villain in some poor csr's story more than once...
they get under out skin because we let them... and they like it. and they're masters at finding out buttons.
blondie: you're welcome. and i mean it. you need a horse though...
jmai: my loyalty is refreshing sure, but i learned it from being abandoned and from abandoning people. both of those states suck.
i'm glad that i inspire good deeds but i'm as fucked up as everyone else too you know? i mean i think everyone should have at least one friend like the people that comment on this blog :)
also thanks *grin*
john: thanks!
Speaking from personal experience since the same guy showed his ass over in my area of the blogsphere before he hit Emma's that sometimes it's best to just ignore them. Yes he hurt feelings and caused emotions to escalate but that's what he wanted, right? By continuing to show this ass attention and fighting back with him he has accomplished exactly what he set out to do. He got inside your head or the head of the ones commenting.
I took the approach to not respond to anything he said, I didn't delete comments because that would be acknowledging him, instead let him say what he wants and let it be that. It would have to get very boring if your goal was to cause drama and none was even thought about, right?
I don't know, maybe it's just me but I think the best defense is to treat them like they don't even exist and are making no impact on your day. Usually people who comment hatefully and secretivly are insecure cowards, what they are typing to others is how they honestly feel towards themselves......it's very sad actually that they are that unhappy with their own life that they have to try and bring other's down for pure enjoyment.
FYI: several people over my way have been able to track his comments and we know now exactly where it's coming from.........not that it makes any difference but he's not as secretive as he would hope.
Great post though Sass.......you always have the best posts
tollerance.
WORD.
Mother needs a wash. a purge in the holy sense. Its too bad that doing so will wash away so many good as well.
I know what you mean -- we all have to earn our stripes, Sass. They're usually not fun lessons but I'm sure glad I don't have to learn em again!
Also you're welcome -s-
kj: i don't tend to read your comments when they're over a hundred because i just don't have time. so i suspect that i missed him.
he definetely got what he wanted from emma's loved ones that day and it's why his nick isn't mentioned anywhere in this post. no credit for beng an asshole. that said, you are correct that in getting people angry he won. if that can be winning.
my first instinct was to delete but then i thought about it some more and realised just what you're saying. it's like looking at a bully and saying "i'm ignoring you" with tears running down your face. doesn't really work. i'm long term curious about where he shows up again since you and madame ignored him and em's commenters responded to him. it shall be interesting.
that quote from a couple of posts ago about "you can go ahead and take pot shots all you want, i'm non stick" really meant a lot to me. i strive to be non stick.
it's funny that you say that... it's why most homophobes turn out to be gay. you attack what you most fear.
so you know who it is? or at least where from? i'm a little curious.
thanks kj, i try :)
hunee: *smile*
fine sum up my post in one word geeze :)
hubris: yeah she really does. but i think this time we're on our own. the problem with purges is that they're unilateral. so go click my 'click for greenland' link and see how we're causing the next one.
jmai: yeah that's it in a nutshell. i had to be an ass to learn not to be an ass... or something.
tragically i've had to learn patience a hundred times and i'm STILL getting that same lesson... so i guess i haven't learned it yet.
deb: i know. and i used to hate them and now i feel sorry for them but i still wish they would just go away.
the buddhists and the yogis and the taoists are the closest to my personal sense of right than any 'organized' religion
sass- major drag
well you did it much better than me! You know I always love reading your blog! Sometimes I have nothing to add b/c you did it so beautifully!
hubris: yeah dude, scary shit isn't it?
hunee: thanks babe :)
i missed you when you weren't around but i'm glad you're back now :)
I HEARD ABOUT HOW GREAT YOUR POST WAS I HAD TO COME READ. I WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST PERSON THE MORON ACTUALLY TRIED TO START CRAP WITH BUT I HAD MY COMMENT MODERATOR ON SO HIS/HER NASTINESS COULDN'T BE VIEWED BY OTHERS AND HE/SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT SO HE/SHE WENT TO WHERE HE/SHE KNEW I'D BE, KJ'S. I HAD SUPPORT FROM MOST OF OUR BLOG FRIENDS. IT ACTUALLY TURNED OUT TO BE PRETTY FUNNY. HIS/HER HATRED TURNED INTO SOMETHING EVERYONE STARTED TO MAKE FUN OF AND HE/SHE LEFT.
LIKE KJ SAID, WE KNOW WHO IT IS AND WHERE THEY ARE.
GREAT POST!
Excellent post, Sass.
What bothers me most about people who leave these anon comments is that they often do it in the name of Christianity. Seems like the more people proclaim their religion, the more judgemental they are. It makes me sick.
Isn't it written in Corinthians? "Faith, Hope and Love, but the greatest of these is love."
Words to live by, in my opinion.
Again, great post honey. You are good people :)
JENN: thank you. i didn't know it was going to get famous *grin*
i wish i understood why people thought this kind of thing was a good idea. i mean i've thought of doing such things but i haven't done them you know? even the thought didn't sit.
guess i was blessed in my parents.
i'm glad you know who it is :)
robyn: thanks babe.
it's true. they hide behind anonymity in the name of a man who did nothing but stand up and demand to be counted. it's so hypocritical.
and it is sickening. how can you say that you are working for the lord when you are spreading hate and intolerance. i can only imagine you must really be evil. you being metaphorical and not you robyn :)
i don't know if that's written in corinthians but it's a fantastic phrase. and yes, definite words to live by.
thanks darlin' means a lot.
ahh you missed me? *smile*
That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling Thanks :) Sometimes it is so nice to know that someone you don't even personally know hopes you are okay
Thank you. :)
hunee: but of course. you were here all the time and then you weren't. left a hole.
yeah it really is. when kathi sent me an email one day that said "are you okay" it really meant a lot.
pyr: thanks!
well, if you're ever coming to town let me know in advance and we can hook up. in advance because my schedule is nutty :)
Well said Sassinak. Sometimes it's quite refreshing to hear someone else rant just like I do sometimes.
When I hear people saying some particular segment of society should be wiped out, they should get an automatic slap on the back of the head, or an ice-cream headache. That would work.
"Owwwwww. I said something really stupid, and now I've got a frozen sinus cavity."
totally off the subject and actually a little odd but...
I love the profile pic for othercat; you know it does look like a old smart cat and that pose looks like it could be talking to you...
okay back to the real matter now...sorry for the interruption :)
othercat: thank you. i do like to rant.
that's the trick for sure... the ice cream headache. "hey what's that for?" "oh"
it would work too.
hunee: i totally agree with you on that one!
dude it's a comments section... it's for comments. say what you like.
I know I am in a weird mood and VERY bored at work..got ADD big time today and can't focus on anything.
I was reading the comments and looked over and thought wow I could totally see that cat saying that...
randomness :)
hunee i know the feeling, sometimes when i teach and something huge is going on at home i like cannot focus.
apparently i still teach okay magically
yay for randomness!
Whoa, what'd I miss whilst in Redding?
Damn haters in the guise of the righteous. It can be hard to not hate back.
Remember that there is a difference between anger and hatred. Anger, directed properly, can be constructive.
Righteous anger can make things happen. It's easy to let the line blur between righteous anger and outright hatred, but I have a feeling you've got a good handle on it.
matt: someone with no life came around and hassled madame and JENN and kj and bubbles. they were particularly hateful to bubbles and i missed their appearance anywhere else.
i'm learning every day that it's the hating back that makes them win. they want everyone to be like them so they don't have to feel so bad about themselves. it's probably why they attack happy people. i think i have more in common with jesus than i realised because i'm really getting to turn the other cheek as the right thing.
i don't mind being angry but i prefer my level head. i do things i regret when i'm angry. that said, when i feel anger and harness it and figure out what i'm really mad at? and deal with it by quitting the job or the boy or the whatever? so useful! but on the road? let it flow into the universe and away...
i'm working on the handle anyway :)
