break break break

.
okay here goes.

*wanders off to kitchen and juices an orange*

holy fuck it takes a whole orange to get four ounces of juice? i should have bought a bag full!

*adds water to juice*

*takes sip*

*hangs out with tummy for a bit*

well let's see what happens as i take in my first calories in six days. well my first non-fast drink type of calories. this has been a very strange and excellent experience and i'm actually sorry that i'm not doing it for longer.

however, i want to drink beer on my birthday and i need at least four days to break this fast. it's strange that it's with orange juice which is something that my tummy traditionally dislikes and that it seems to be going down okay right now.

that said? it's taken me nearly an hour to drink this glass of juice and i won't have another one for at least a couple of hours. i do feel it sort of warming the pipes though. it's almost like my tongue and my digestive system are tingly or something.

i see why they pick orange juice. it's sharp and tangy but easy to water down and it feels like it's priming the pump inside me. damm y'all it's got me kind of high.
.

then i had to go and ruin it by going to do my license renewal. in the afternoon.

yeah, what the hell was i thinking, next time do it in the morning!!

but i'm all legal and paid for to drive for another year so i guess i can't bitch too much.
.

okay so now it's ten hours since i had that first glass of juice and i am now drinking a third glass. i've been steadily adding more pulp to the mix all day and it's really tasting good now.

what i find most odd is that the orange juice really isn't making me more hungry. i was expecting that the hardest part would be the day while i drink juice but still can't actually have any food. i thought i would be starving all day.

nope, i think the acidity in the oj is actually keeping the urge not to eat going the same way the lemon juice did. so weird.

i'm really glad that i did this and in fact i'm wishing that i had done it for longer and started it tuesday morning instead of thursday afternoon. that way i would have done eight days instead of six. ah well, next time.

this is probably the first thing i've ever done where i felt like y'all wanted an actual report.

the weirdest part for me is either that it's really so easy to do or that your moods really do change each day and different things come to the forefront. y'all know about saturday and my ragefest and that was definetely the worst, but the hopeless despair on sunday sucked too.

what's interesting is that i read a website that says that this will continue to happen because your body is flushing toxins and that you just drink more fluid and make sure to move your bowels at least three times a day and this will pass easily.

well for me it's even better, once i got the freaking plumbing working (aka sucked it up and drank the laxative tea) my mood was happy and cheerful and i didn't have any headaches.

before i got the plumbing working correctly? oh my god. i had a headache bad enough to flatten a quarterback and i was ragingly mad or depressed or basically not on an even emotional keel. i mean we're talking night and day, the last three days have been lovely.

saturday and sunday? pretty shitty.

the headache i had on the weekend did give me one clue though, next time? quit caffeine at least a week or even ten days before you start a fast because holy fuck the withdrawl headaches suck. and you can't fix them with food and sugar like you can when you're eating.

boo yeah caffeine headaches combined with toxins and not shitting? bad stuff let me tell you.

so tomorrow i have more lemon drink and more juice and then i can have vegetable soup for late lunch or dinner. i'll decide based on how a cup of the soup broth goes down at lunch. i'm currently wandering the web looking for soup recipes that go with:
In the evening make a vegetable broth (no canned soup). Use seasonal leafy and root vegetables such as: beets and beet tops, turnips and turnip greens, kale, carrots, onions, parsley, celery, potatoes, okra, one or two inds of legumes, squash, beans, a little salt, cayenne pepper and dehydrated vegetables or veg. powder may be added for flavor (no MSG or hydrolyzed protein).
Cook lightly. Drink the broth, eating only a few bites of the vegetables.

make a vegetable broth? how much water? how many carrots? how long is lightly? how on earth do squash and celery cook for the same amound of time? what the fuck? i hate not having a recipe. any home cooks out there have some tips for me? it's looking like about 8 cups of water to however much of whichever veg i feel like using...

and re the legumes? which ones do y'all think would go well in that crazy mix? i was just going to get some peas or something but it's tough.

*grumble* not making this easy are they?

seriously i don't make soup, if anyone has advice before noon on thursday i WANT IT! :)

hey tomorrow is thursday... that means if i go wandering the web right now i'll find a bunch of half naked peole. sorry i got nothing but my computer died and i'm on the old slow one with no pics. :)

oh wait... here's one of me as a baby... okay toddler

those colours are real.

i know, hard to believe :)

okay, now that we've established that..

i hate not having recipes, too. i mean, i love to improvise... but i feel i need a good foundation to start with.

legumes? how about lentils? they're yummy in soup.

i'm so impressed with your ability to fast. and the caffeine withdrawal can kill you, unless you phase it out slowly.

that picture! omigod! look at all that blonde hair! adorable.

terry: yup yup

terry two: second too!

dude he could at least make a suggestion of quantity or something. i mean i get that i'm supposed to be all vegetarian cooking hottie or whatever but come on!

yeah but i have to start the lentils earlier today right? like with the soaking and all... otherwisei have to cook the soup for days. i dig them though they're awesome.

the fasting thing has been excellent, really i recommend it. maybe once you're more routine though and i would start on a long weekend (thursday was a good day from that perspective... just wish i had more days)

or not, whatever, i felt i needed to fast, everyone else has to do their thing.

i know, how ridiculously adorable was i? it's almost painful!

kathi: isn't it beautiful? my parents were mad for the photos for a few years and i happen to have been born when it started... and my mother to this day loves the flower porn.

i think dad took this pic actually... and it blows me away how outrageously pretty it is!

i hadn't noticed that about the eyes but you're right... and the shape of my face is there too.

You rock the fasting. I, on the other hand, lasted a day because of the mighty menstruation gods. So I am now waiting for the pain and the bleeding to go away so I can cleanse...cause..yeah.

That is a totally amazing pic. Look at your cheeks...damn! Aren't you glad you have it for posterity?

nat: yeah i'm really glad i have it for posterity.

and you know with the fasting? i've been sort of off food all summer, it's really easy to fast when you don't live in air conditioning and it's hotter than fuck 24/7. fasting in the winter would kill me.

well you still want to do it so there's nothing stopping you right?

you lived in fairlyland as a child? LOL

and how do you feel? do you feel cleansed and purged?

one of the big complaints by folks here on the vegan cleansing thing are that the first few days are worst, with lots of headaches reported. Glad you're past that stage :)

dzer: heh, sort of. i had a lake and a beautiful garden with a strawberry patch and rocks and trees to climb and parents who paid attention to me. so yeah.

actually i feel awesome, i just really wish i had done the whole ten days.

i really blame the headaches on the coffee and the not pooing, i'll let you know next time if it's better :)

pyr: you're welcome. i think it's been awesome honestly but i'm not one to push people into things unless they want to do them... okay except for pilates :)

i'll keep reporting if it's interesting otherwise it will be passing comments :)

it is interesting to see that i never lost that look of wonder isn't it?

^that was me, I forgot to say, get a pot.

OK, soup.

Get a pot. Get one onion and chop it up in big chunks the size of dimes. Chop one carrot into round pieces the width of your little finger until they get bigger than quarters then cut those ones into half-moons. Beets, turnips, or rutebega can go in now too, cut up to the same size. Put it all in the pot with 2 cups of water. Turn the heat on to medium low and put a lid on it. If it boils noisily, turn it down. After 30 minutes add any more things that are soft and might be salad if you looked at them hard enough (turnip greens, beet greens, beans, kale, okra, parsley or whatever). Put any potatoes or squash you are using in then, too, cut into the same size pieces as the carrot (if you put it in before then they will just dissolve - OK if you like that kind of thing). I would suggest Italian lentils (they are kind of snot coloured) at this point too. Add some more water so that everything is covered. Cook on low another 10-25 minutes, it should be at that quiet boil again for at least 15 minutes, this time stir every 5 minutes or so. Taste a lentil to make sure they have gone soft. A minute or two before you want to eat it, stir in a handful of frozen peas. Turn off the heat when they rise to the top and enjoy.

I hope you can follow it this way. Please email me for clarification if necessary. This is how I cook but I am not regular in many ways at all.

Best,
Joanna

and it looks so good!

(i'm waiting for cooling now)

yeah but see next time i make soup? i'm following this recipe... and that's awesome right?

:)

That really is a spectacular pic. I'm wondering though... going back to the subject of soup, have you done this before? Does yr body reject the food outright? Mine did. Badly.

spared: i know it's great huh? my parents have a few pics that ridiculously excellent :)

no i've never done it before but so far i've been following the directions and it's been working okay. i think maybe because it took me an hour or so to drink a half litre of soup.

anyway, so far it feels pretty good although weird as heck. it's strange to have weight in my digestive tract.

what did your body do?

The pic, absolutely adorable! So surreal.

I wish I had read this last night. I could have helped you with the soup. You can strain it after cooking and save the veggies for later when you can eat more solids. Is that what you did?

Ok I'm a little late to the game so no sense in trying to give you recipe hints. Actually I'm surprised it didn't mention cabbage since that's usually the staple of vegetable soups.

Where did you read about this fasting programme? You might have mentioned it in a prior post but I've been not so good with the keeping up lately.

I love that photo, it looks like a really pretty dogwood tree or something and it's just sooo beautiful against the perfect green of that lawn and the cute little imp that is baby Sass in the midst of it. Never lose that photo!

Stupid Question Warning; are you still blonde, but dye it or did your blonde slowly get darker as you got older? (I understand that you are not as dark naturally as in the picture)

told you it was a stupid question...

Glad to see all went well with the fast :)

sign: i know, that's just how i feel about it myself.

i wish i had posted this sooner, y'all gave some great advice that would have made my soup better. like i cooked it too hot and slightly scorched it... although it's strangely delicious anyway.

i think it's very specific and easy to digest veg is all. i didn't really read about it so much as watch my teacher do it and realise that it seemed like something i wanted to do. so then i looked up the one she did and went for it. :)

i have no idea where that photo is, i should ask. and yeah, my parents are both great photogs.

spared: damm girl that sucks. i've been dying to eat all day, in fact i cheated a bit and had a bite of potato salad (not supposed to have dairy)

it did work out and it feels lovely, i'm sad it didn't work for you. baby? how preggers are you?

"saturday and sunday? pretty shitty."

So to speak! hah!

Sorry I missed the soup suggestion period. I'd go with brown lentils and no you don't have to soak them first.

The picture of you as a child is just amazing. You were so cute!

I was thinking I might try a fast, but reading your reports I've decided not to. Its not the right time for me. Love reading about your fast though, so thanks for the posts.

nope, my hair just changed very fast when i was very young. if you look close you'll see my eyes are still blue too in that pic. and my current pics are all natural me, i haven't coloured my hair in years...

why was it stupid?

well it's not over entirely, i have to be very careful for another thirty six hours at least... but yeah, it was awesome.

gabi: i'm trying to picture you blonde and it isn't working!

wait your hair turned colour with pregnancy? you were still blonde as an adult?

You're beautiful! I love this picture.

As far as the soup:

Cook lightly = simmer... don't do a raging boil or anything.

You'll want to throw in your beets, carrots, celery and potatoes and let them cook first until tender, then add your other veggies. If not, your squash and other soft veggies will turn to mush.

Simmer til everything is tender and it should work out fine.

Good luck sweetie :)

what about my reports has gotten you thinking you won't do it now? and you're welcome :)

hunee; okay if you say so.

robyn: thanks!

i fucked it up and boiled and you can taste it, but it's still pretty good.

yeah my squash melted. i turned on the water, set it to boil and threw in the lentils. then i chopped and tossed in this order: beets, turnip, carrots, potatoes, italian parsley, celery, squash, bok choy, green onion, green tops of things and uh... i forget :)

it boiled but it's all yummy so who cares! :)

thanks!
